Design Options

Shutterfly has a great selection of page layouts that can display from one to ten or more photos on a single page. Some layouts have space for text and layouts are organized by the number of photos they accept, so its easy to find one that fits the page you are designing. They also have a good variety of backgrounds organized by occasion and theme that you can use when you make your photo book. They don’t allow you to use a photo or other image file as a background though, which means you can’t use some of the more creative photo book page design ideas. They do allow you to upload a complete digital scrapbook page that you have created in other software, but this must include the photos already, it cannot be just the background.

The Shutterfly software lets you choose from a few edge decoration options, including drop shadow, photo corners and colored frames.  There are also a few artistic edge effects like stamp, rough edge and colored ‘angled’ frames. You can also apply a few photo effects like black and white, color tone (like sepia), saturate and soft focus. There is also a red eye removal tool. If you place a photo into a frame that is the wrong dimensions for it (i.e place a wide photo in a square frame), you can choose which parts of the photo get displayed and which parts get cropped. Shutterfly also supports digital scrapbooking, allowing you to import entire pages from your scrapbooking or image editing software.
